Don’t be fooled by insolvency fall

LEADING North West chartered accountants and business advisors, Mitchell Charlesworth, is warning people not to be complacent with their spending in 2008 following a surprise fall in insolvency figures.

Recent figures, released by the Insolvency Service, show that the number of individuals declaring themselves insolvent has dropped by 0.6 per cent to 106,645 from a record high of 107,288 in 2006.

Despite this 24,846 people were still declared insolvent in the final quarter of 2007, which was a fall of 3.9 per cent on the previous quarter and a massive 16.4 per cent fall on the same period in 2006, and 2008 looks to be a year were many people may find themselves struggling.

Jeremy Oddie, partner and head of corporate recovery and insolvency at Mitchell Charlesworth, said: “It is extremely likely that we will see a rise in these figures by the end of 2008 due to rising fuel costs, travel expenses and council tax demands. Not to mention the fact that thousands of homeowners will be coming to the end of fixed rate mortgage deals this year.

“Many people who have traditionally borrowed their way out of debt with loans and by borrowing against housing equity will struggle to do so as lenders are becoming a lot more stringent in their borrowing criteria and as house price rises continue to slow many people will find that they have no equity to tap in to.”

Recent reports have highlighted that one in 10 adults spend more than they earn every month and are relying on credit cards and overdrafts to plug the gap. This has been recognised by credit card companies who are now making it much harder to obtain credit.

Jeremy said: “People really do have to live within their means from now on and spending on non-essential purchases, like second holidays and other luxury goods will have to be curbed in order for people to give themselves a fighting chance in 2008. It seems that over the past few years the UK has been in the grips of a ‘spendemic’.

The number of people taking out Individual Voluntary Agreements (IVA’s) also fell in the final quarter of 2007 to 9,188.

Mitchell Charlesworth’s taxman retires

NORTH West Chartered Accountants and business advisors Mitchell Charlesworth has bid a fond farewell to a tax manager who has retired after almost 50 years in the industry.

Trevor Evans, from Marchwiel, near Wrexham, has finally hung up his calculator at the firm’s Nicholas Street offices after 47 years dealing with tax issues.

The 65-year-old started his career at the Inland Revenue when he was 18, working in Wrexham, London and Manchester. He then joined Chester-based accountants Noel Humphries in November 1976, which was acquired by Mitchell Charlesworth Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors in 1994.

Trevor, who has been married to Maureen for 43 years and has two children and three grandchildren, has no immediate plans for his retirement. He said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Mitchell Charlesworth and over the years I have seen the firm substantially develop and grow. All the staff and clients have been great which has really made coming to work enjoyable.

“I haven’t decided what to do when I finally retire, except take the dog for more walks to the pub!”

More than 35 colleagues attended a party for Trevor where he was presented with a decanter, wine and book tokens as a gift for his retirement.

Richard Hoppins, a partner at Mitchell Charlesworth, added: “Trevor has been a great ambassador for Mitchell Charlesworth over the years and has played a part in the firm’s growth. I am sure everyone would like to wish him a long and happy retirement and the best of luck for the future.”

Mitchell Charlesworth appoint insolvency specialist

AN INCREASE in personal and corporate insolvency has led to North West Chartered Accountants and business advisors Mitchell Charlesworth boosting its insolvency team.

Jane Finch, from Altrincham, has joined the firm’s Nicholas Street offices in Chester as a licensed insolvency practitioner.

The 30-year-old specialises in personal and corporate insolvency and joins from Manchester-based Accuma Insolvency Practitioners Ltd. Prior to that, Jane was a partner at specialist insolvency practitioners BN Jackson Norton.

Jane is a Licensed Insolvency Practitioner and is a member of the Insolvency Practitioners Association and the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (R3).

David Darlington, Mitchell Charlesworth’s managing partner, said: “Jane is a valued addition to the firm as she brings a wealth of insolvency expertise and experience. Her appointment will extend our team of Licensed Insolvency Practitioners and she will help manage the increasing volume of both personal and corporate insolvency cases.

“However, it is essential for businesses to seek advice at the earliest stage possible because the sooner they seek help the sooner a solution can be found – no matter how bad the situation is we are here to listen and help.
